How much is anyone worth? How much are you worth?

With apologies to all of you who have no interest in football: did Wayne Rooney justify his £300,000 per week pay check with one kick of the ball?

Why is this relevant in a blog about personal effectiveness for small business owners?

Because it gets to the heart of what business is about: providing a product/service at a price that people are happy to pay and that reflects the VALUE that you bring to the market.

One of the most common factors affecting people’s ability to breakthrough and become successful is their relationship to money.

Every time Wayne Rooney steps on to a football pitch he carries with him the weight of £300,000 per week expectation.

And here’s the question for you: what weight of expectation are you prepared to carry for the service or product that you offer?

There can be no doubt that Rooney delivered value to the 70,000 people who were in the stadium, to the millions who paid to watch live on TV around the world and to his employers for the worldwide press, TV, radio and web coverage that they are now receiving and will continue to receive for a long time to come.

One of the biggest issues for small business owners is their ability to charge a price that reflects the value that they offer and then get enough people to buy at that price.

The biggest hurdle to achieving this is the mindset of the business owner. If you don’t believe that you are worth the money you wish to charge why would anyone else?

When Wayne Rooney steps on to the field he is not expected to score a goal as spectacular as the one scored yesterday every time; but it is the knowledge that he has the skill to do so that keeps the fans coming and his employer willing to pay.

Our views about money are stored in the deepest recesses of our values and beliefs about the world. They have been instilled in us from an early age and built upon over the years of our experience of life.

Here are three questions that will help you identify your relationship to money:

  • It’s immoral for anyone to earn millions of pounds: agree – disagree

  • Rich people are greedy and self-serving: agree – disagree

  • Only super talented people get to become rich – agree – disagree

If you agree with just one of those questions you are harbouring beliefs about money that are holding you back from reaching your potential and delivering your best. The more statements you agree with, the more baggage you carry that is holding you back.

You may have come across this, no doubt apocryphal story, in one of many different guises:

Nikola Tesla visited Henry Ford at his factory, which was having some kind of difficulty. Ford asked Tesla if he could help identify the problem area. Tesla walked up to a wall of boilerplate and made a small X in chalk on one of the plates. Ford was thrilled, and told him to send an invoice.  The bill arrived, for $10,000. Ford asked for a breakdown. Tesla sent another invoice, indicating a $1 charge for marking the wall with an X, and $9,999 for knowing where to put it.

What Wayne Rooney achieved at the weekend (and David Beckham before him) was to make this story real.

So here’s your challenge:-

Identify what you can do that is the equivalent of scoring a goal from the half way line or marking the x on the boilerplate. You won’t be asked to deliver that all the time but the knowledge that you can will help you clear your mind of the baggage which is stopping you charging the right price for the value you offer
